Dating from 1072, the Castle was the seat of the Prince Bishops until 1832. it now houses University College, the foundation college of Durham University, and is open for guided tours. Opening Hours:Open July - September and Easter and Christmas vacation daily 10am - 12 noon and 2pm - 4.30pm. Other times of year: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 2-4pm. Visitors should note that the Castle is closed during the Christmas period. University ceremonies and functions also make it necessary to close the Castle at dates and times which cannot be specified in advance. Charges: Enquiries:
