Rework ‘Steel Magnolia’s and make it into something a bit less maudlin, relocate it to Beirut and it might resemble this brisk dramatic comedy that combines melodrama, humour and social critique in equal measure. The setting is Beirut’s Si Bella salon, an upscale beauty parlour where middle-class Lebanese women congregate to talk about men, sex and motherhood, in between haircuts and sugar waxing with caramel.
An engaging and accomplished film that is a warm, often very funny tribute, to the power of friendship among women, and to the city in which it all unfolds.
French/Lebanese with English subtitles.

Almodovar's Oscar winning classic tells the story of Roth, who leaves Madrid for Barcelona after the death of her beloved teenage son to hook up with old friends and - just maybe - to contact the long estranged father the boy never knew. This film is a beautifully crafted, semi-ironic melodrama with formal and emotional sophistication that really impresses.

Saturday 18 October – Sunday 23 November 2008
Summer (1 April-31 October) 10am - 5pm
Winter (1 November-31 March) 10am - 4pm.
This atmospheric series of photographs by Tim Brennan explores how geography, personal memory and social history intersect.
In the tradition of the seascape, the images depict the North Sea, where most of the North’s unmined coal still resides.
The photographs in the exhibition have been created using a low-resolution mobile phone camera which when enlarged beyond clear definition, the images become hazy and impressionistic, suggesting the more abstract works of Turner.
Tim Brennan is viewed as one of the most important artists to contribute to the social and political role of contemporary art particularly around minimalism, performance and land art. He is Programme Leader for MA Curating at the University of Sunderland.

EXHIBITION: ‘TREASURES FROM THE ATTIC’
The exhibition will run from Friday 3rd October 2008 until the end of January 2009.
Museum of Archaeology, Old Fulling Mill, Durham DH1 3EB
Contact Further Information 0191 334 1823
The Old Fulling Mill is open from 11am to 4pm daily until the end of October. From November to March the museum is open 11.30am to 3.30pm Friday to Monday. Entry to the museum is £1 for adults, 50p for children and concessions and is free for students.
The exhibition delves into the history of the Old Fulling Mill Museum and gives visitors a rare opportunity to see some of the more unusual archaeological objects in the University’s collections, many of which are normally hidden from view in museum stores. Highlights of the new display include 2500 year-old painted vases from Greece; rare pots and figures from Chinese tombs; and exquisite inscribed seals from ancient Mesopotamia.
Founded in 1833, only a year after Durham University itself, the Old Fulling Mill was only the second university museum in the country to open to the public. Craig Barclay, museum curator said: “This year we are celebrating 175 years since the original founding of a museum in the Old Fulling Mill. Our permanent displays focus very much on local archaeology so this exhibition gives us a chance to share with visitors a few of the rarities to be found our other collections. This exhibition reflects the history of the museum and of collecting at Durham University – these objects are quite literally the treasures in our attic.”

The Gates Shopping Centre, Milburngate, Durham City

Bread Stories is an interactive documentary installation by Tina Gharavi about two bakers, Danny and Khalid living on each side of the Wall of Separation.
As part of the installation a suspended screen transects the centre of a large darkened room. On either side of the screen is the image of a bakery; one in Israel and one in Palestine. These tell the stories of Danny and Khalid. In order for the viewer to see the stories they must move between sides of the screen, movement activates the film. Both sides must be considered, yet only one screen can be seen at a time. The installation documentary is a unique method of telling stories that cross the divide. The project invites the viewer to engage with human stories of this resonant conflict and to keep an open mind about life on both sides of the Wall of Separation.

The work presented is the first UK screening of the AV installation piece 'Stadtplan', part of a new series of work created by North East artists Sam Watson and Michael Gardiner during a recent residency in Berlin. The work is an exploration into the ideas and realities concerning urbanism in contemporary culture.
'Stadtplan' deals with a variety of utopian ideas with regard to mega cities such as Berlin. Focusing on why tourists and potential residents are drawn from all over the World to a city that is still dreaming of, and still rapidly making changes towards a bright and commercially viable future. The project lays emphasis on the fact that as the city's aspirations and desired clientele change so does its urban landscape.

Gala Theatre, The Blue Room, Millennium Place, Durham, DH1 1WA

Marcus Coates has developed an international reputation for an ongoing series of performances and Shamanic rituals made into films and photographs that recall the animal cults of pre-modern societies. Whether dressed as a stag at a gathering of the baffled tenants of a condemned Liverpool tower block or training people to mimic the dawn chorus, Coates' work reconsiders the spiritual roles of animals and nature in postmodern society. Through a combination of his earnestness as a Shaman, the absurdity of the Shamanic ritual in a contemporary setting, and his deadpan documentary style Coates inadvertently exposes class structures and calls into question the need for a reconnection with our origins.
During this programme Marcus will talk about his work and in particular his influences and the process of making artists films and videos. Following the talk Workplace will screen a selection of Marcus' recent films and videos.

Dir. Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Starring: Arkanae Cherkum, Jaruchi Imamarum
This surreal tale of tangled human relationships begins with a look at the faltering love life of a demure young female doctor at a remote Thai hospital. The film then explores alternative realities, unrealities and surrealities. Given the challenges that it poses Syndromes and a Century is an exceptionally easy and pleasurable watch, with plenty of humour and beautifully considered cinematography.

FISH FRUIT AND GAME by Alison Yates
Alison Yates quirkily written dark comedy follows the fortunes of two women working in a greengrocers who believe their employer is exploiting them. Full of humour and cos lettuce.
THE SEARCH by Steve Lambert
When the Captain appears unexpectedly at the house of the Professor, it's obvious the latter has been upsetting the authorities. But what exactly is his crime? And what will be the punishment? An intriguing cat-and-mouse game as the truth is slowly revealed.
Earlier this year Cloud Nine, one of the region’s most innovative theatre companies, invited submissions for its next PlayDay. The company sought two new 30-minute scripts, which could be workshopped throughout the day then performed before a live audience in the evening; to give writers an opportunity to work with professional actors and a director. The two plays above were the ones chosen.
Several scripts chosen for previous Cloud Nine PlayDays have eventually been taken to full production by the company.

Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait follows Zinedine Zidane during one full length football game (Real Madrid vs Villareal, April 23rd 2005). Seventeen cameras followed Zidane during this game focusing on his every move. The footage is accompanied by excerpts from recorded interviews with Zidane which are focused solely on his attitude towards the beautiful game. The result is a film so hypnotic and absorbing that you'll feel a part of the action. An outstanding soundtrack by Mogwai perfectly compliments the images on the screen to produce a spectacular visual observation unlike other documentary.

Michael Berkeley and Ian McEwan’s new opera is a thrilling tale of dark obsession and misplaced passion. At its centre is composer Charles Frieth – a compulsive womaniser - charismatic, egocentric and completely oblivious to the destructive desire about to be unleashed at the heart of his household.
The brilliantly crafted text by Ian McEwan has all the elements that have made his novels Atonement, Enduring Love, Saturday and On Chesil Beach number one bestsellers. It has inspired a wonderful score from composer and broadcaster Michael Berkeley, filled with powerful undercurrents, dramatic force and impassioned vocal writing.
